MANOLI l’élan, la rencontre

« MANOLI l’élan, la rencontre » (éd. Somogy 2003)

The preface to the book is by Robert Solé, writer and mediator at Le Monde; Pascal Bonafoux, writer, critic and professor of Art History at Paris 8; Britt Manoli , the artist’s wife. It is followed by an excellent text in the form of an ABC by the writer, David Rosenberg.

“What better way to describe an innovative and anti-conformist sculptor than through the medium of an innovative presentation? Manoli, l’élan, la rencontre by David Rosenberg achieves this aim. Those already familiar with Manoli will acknowledge the value of this publication. Those who have not yet discovered him will have this pleasure in the lively presentation of the artist and his works.

The summary introduces the artist through the eyes of his wife and several writers. The attraction of David Rosenberg’s portrait of him , in the form of an ABC, lies in its originality and synthetism. With simple efficiency he outlines a portrait of Manoli the artist, Manoli the technician, Manoli the eternal child.

The thematic treatment of the chapters which follow, illustrated by full page photographs, offers a broad spectrum of the artist’s works.

Working in clay, earthenware or brass Manoli shows no preference for any one material but he always remains faithful to his chosen tool: fire.As David Rosenberg puts it so well, “The blow torch was an extension of his hand at the correct temperature.”

The sacred flame burnt in Manoli. This truth, which Prometheus himself would not gainsay, is proved in this work. In spite of its square rigid format, the book conveys the perpetual motion of Manoli’s works through the pleasure to be found in returning again and again to its pages.” D.Q.
